Neck pain can sometimes be referred to the head, the shoulders, the arms, the chest and the back.  The most common cause of acute neck injury is motor vehicle accidents.  Other possible etiologies for neck pain include occupational injuries, trauma, disease, congenital anomalies, and poor posture.

Upon completion of this course you will recognize red flags for cancer in patients with neck pain, be able to list common diagnostic tests to elucidate neck pain etiology and describe their indications and limitations, Identify the signs and symptoms of acute cervical sprain/strain, be able to describe which activities may predispose a person to cervical inter-vertebral disc herniation.  Analyze the effectiveness of many common cervical pain treatments being utilized by a variety of health care practitioners  and be able to discuss measures to reduce the risk of neck injury in the workplace and educate others in proper posture and lifting techniques.  2/3rds of the class is hands-on proper technique training.

Remember, it is always the physicians responsibility to diagnose and order treatment for patients with neck pain.
